What does an outsourced grocery sales partner actually do?

Why brands need one at all

Start with the landscape. The UK has more than 12,000 food and drink manufacturers,1 and around 98% are SMEs.2 Thousands of small teams are competing for the same shelf, usually without a dedicated sales function. A partner exists to give a small brand the reach and the relationships of a much bigger one, without the cost of building that team in house.

Buyer outreach

We identify the right buyer for each brand, not just any buyer at any retailer. Then we make the approach, follow up properly, and get the meeting booked. Cold outreach into a supermarket has a rhythm to it. Miss the rhythm and you get ignored. We know it because we used to be on the receiving end.

Timing is half of it. Buyers work to category review calendars, and an approach that lands in the wrong week goes nowhere no matter how good the product is. A partner who knows those cycles can put your brand in front of the right person at the moment they are actually building their range, rather than months after the decisions have already been made.

Knowing the room

A partner has to understand the retailer landscape in detail. A handful of grocers control almost all of UK spending,3 and each has its own strategy, shopper and buying process. Knowing who to approach, in what order, and with what argument, is most of the job. The rest is showing up prepared.

Account management

Once a listing is live, we manage the relationship. Regular check-ins, performance reviews, and handling whatever comes up between the brand and the retailer. The founder should not need to be on every call. That is the point of having a partner.

This is the part of the job that rarely makes the brochure and matters the most. Listings are not won once. They are defended and grown across dozens of small interactions. A query answered quickly. A supply issue caught early. A promotion planned before the buyer has to ask. Done well, account management is invisible, and invisible is exactly what a buyer wants from a supplier they can rely on.

Sales planning

We build the roadmap. Which retailers to target, in what order, and when. This is tied to your actual capacity, not to an ambitious wishlist. We would rather land three listings that perform than ten that stretch your supply too thin and put you at risk of a delist.4

Sequencing is a skill in itself. The right order of retailers can make each pitch easier than the last, because momentum and proof compound. The wrong order can leave you overextended and under-resourced. A good partner spends as much time deciding what not to chase, and when to say not yet, as deciding what to go after. Discipline here is worth more than ambition.

Reporting

We track sell-through, rate of sale, and stock availability, and we report it back in plain terms. Buyers respect brands that turn up to reviews with their own numbers already in hand. Good reporting is not admin. It is what wins the next conversation.

There is a quiet power shift when a brand knows its own data as well as the buyer does. Instead of waiting to be told how you are performing, you walk in with the story already framed. You spotted the dip before they did and here is your fix. You found the store cluster where you outperform and here is your case for more space. That is how a small brand earns a seat at the table with a very large retailer.

Negotiation support

Terms, margin, promotional funding, listing fees.5 We handle these conversations directly with the buyer, drawing on relationships and experience most brands do not yet have in house. This is often where a partner pays for itself several times over, because small changes to terms compound across a year.

Growth execution

Beyond the first listing, we push for range extensions, better facings, and new store rollouts. Growth does not happen automatically once you are on shelf. Somebody has to keep asking for it, with evidence, at the right moment. That somebody is us.

What a partner is not

A partner is not a one-off introduction service. It is not a favour and a phone number. And it is not a replacement for a good product. What it is, when it works, is an ongoing sales function that sits alongside your brand until you are ready to run this in house. We measure ourselves on listings won, listings protected, and accounts grown.

Is it right for you?

If you have a product buyers should want but no consistent way to reach them, a partner is probably the missing piece. Book a call and we will tell you honestly whether we can add value, and where.
